In the first 3 editions of Christiane Northrup, MD’s book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom she relates a story in the “introduction” portion of her book about her experience with breastfeeding called “Physician Heal Thyself”. She is a board certified OB/GYN. Note: the story doesn’t appear in the current 4th edition published in 2010. http://www.amazon.com/Womens-Bodies-Wisdom-Edition-byNorthrup/dp/B006S3V62E
I encourage you to find any of the first 3 editions of this book and read her story. Check your local library or the link. It is a powerful story about what happens when we don’t take care of ourselves. Even if you are a doctor and you know better.
As she describes in the story, while breastfeeding her daughter, she developed a breast infection or mastitis. She states it could have been taken care of with rest and antibiotics. Instead she continued to work at her job as an OB/GYN physician. She ended up in a far more serious situation, that had lasting repercussions. As she says, she didn’t even take the advice she would have given to any of her patients.
Take the time to take care of yourself. You are worth it!
