When it was time to go back to work with my third baby, I took him for a practice day at the babysitters like I had done for my two older children. I left a bottle of breastmilk, but when I came to get him (within 4 hours) he hadn’t need to be fed. I didn’t think much about this, he had taken a bottle well a month before when I was involved with a wedding. There hadn’t been a need to give him a bottle in the interim.
My first day back to work, I got a call over the lunch hour. My caregiver had watched children for over 20 years and she had never had one she couldn’t get to take a bottle–today was the day. My son was not going to do it! Thankfully, I could travel over my lunch hour to feed him. He eventually, did take a bottle of breastmilk–but it was on his terms, not mine. I continued to go and feed him at lunch, my sitter continued to offer him the bottle with no expectations. He eventually got around to accepting this. It just took awhile!
